Shane McCrae, the award-winning author of thirteen books of poetry, will read from his debut memoir, Pulling the Chariot of the Sun: A Memoir of a Kidnapping (Simon & Schuster 2023). When McCrae was three years old and living with his Black father in Oregon, his white maternal grandparents kidnapped him and absconded to Texas. For the next ten years, McCrae lived with grandparents who misrepresented how he wound up living with them. Pulling the Chariot of the Sun probes the effects of that terrible and baffling rupture.
