Zapton will show "Unexpected Readymades" Sept. 4-Oct. 18; opening reception with the artist Sept. 4, 5-7:30 p.m.

**Check gallery website for hours**

Unexpected Readymades are mixed-media works made up of whimsical imagery and bright colors garnered from paint-by-numbers and puzzles, common pastimes of childhood in the 50's and 60's. But as "readymade" suggests in the title, a Dada-like sensibility and incisive cultural critique slip in through the playfulness and pop art references, as artist Steve Zapton recontextualizes and recombines these found images into witty and dynamic juxtapositions.

Steve Zapton, professor emeritus of art, design and art history, taught and inspired students at JMU for more than 30 years. He earned his bachelor's degree in painting and printmaking from the University of Michigan and his masters in photography from Pratt Institute. He has shown his work extensively throughout the East Coast with recent solo exhibitions at Ox-Eye Vineyards Tasting Room and Beverly Street Studio School Gallery in Staunton, Va.
