This session will employ the story exchange model developed by international nonprofit Narrative 4 (N4). N4 story exchanges are intended to foster empathy by breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes. This powerful methodology creates the opportunity for participants to step inside someone else’s story, taking their partner’s perspectives, and to hear their own stories told by a different voice. Prior to the session, participants will receive a list of prompts to guide them in selecting a personal story. In the first part of the session, two facilitators will model the process, setting a standard of vulnerability and respect, and participants will have a chance to “pair and share” their stories. In the second part, participants will tell their partners’ stories in the first person to a group of 10-12. Afterward, facilitators will lead a discussion of what it felt like to take on another’s story and create a sense of closure.
